Abstract

This article briefly presents the history of afro descendant communities in Mexico, from their arrival in the context of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people to their situation during the Viceroyalty, and through the independence war and the creation of independent Mexico. The racist ideologies that justified the discrimination of this group in national history are also explained; as well as the main demands of the African descent communities and civil organization in recent times. Finally, the main progresses and pending challenges in the fight for equality and full recognition of their rights as Mexican citizens are also mentioned.
