Abstract

This article deals with the present and future of the relationship and is divided into three parts. The first analyzes the rapprochement between Mexico and Canada during the last six years. To this end, the actions undertaken by the Mexican government to overcome the situation in which the country found itself in 1988, the role played by foreign policy in this effort, and the process of negotiating and signing the NAFTA are referred to. The second part addresses the growing development and diversification of contacts between Mexico and Canada, as well as the challenges that both countries will face in the new international context and in the development of the bilateral relationship. The article concludes, in the third part, with the proposal to incorporate continuity and consistency as additional elements in the direction of Mexican policy towards Canada. The year 1994 marks a milestone in the bilateral relationship, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.
