Abstract

Among the great men of universal history, the figure of Toussaint Louverture stands out, surprising for his career as a leader and statesman of international projection that emerged in such a unique geohistorical setting, that of a Caribbean sugar island in the 18th century. This figure assumes a particular force: it is inserted in the history of the ancient antagonism domination-liberation, slavery-freedom, colonization-emancipation, which five centuries ago, in this American continent, constituted one of the fundamental elements of historical evolution and fed the human utopia of equality between men and between nations.
