Abstract

Four elements were decisive for the United Nations mediation to be proposed in the Salvadoran case at the beginning of 1990 and, through it, the negotiation process that put an end to the civil war in El Salvador took place: the military tie, internal pressure from the whole of civil society; international pressure, increased by the geopolitical repercussions of the conflict, the end of East-West tension and the strategic consideration that regional conflicts should be resolved; and the end of the possibility of continuing the peace talks only with internal mediation.
