Human Rights and the United Nations in the last Decade of the 20th Century

The achievement of international cooperation in the promotion and encouragement of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction based on race, sex, language or religion, is one of the central purposes of the United Nations. The fact that Mexico was elected a member of the UN Human Rights Commission for the period 1993-1995, with the highest number of votes obtained by a Latin American country, is a recognition of the great priority that the Mexican government gives to respect for human rights. In this essay, the author reflects on the subject of human rights, its current meaning and its connection with the United Nations.
