Private International Law and Foreign Policy: A View from International Maintenance Obligations

Abstract

Traditionally the link between international law and foreign policy has been drawn leaning solely to the public side of this area of the law. Nevertheless, since private international law offers tools to ensure a foreign policy focused on people with clear impact on the life of individuals, it is necessary to reexamine Mexico´s experience on this front and capitalize on it through a renewed commitment with all of the issues encompassed thereof, including foreign maintenance obligations, which serves as an example to track Mexico’s trajectory for the past 20 years and delineate the vision that should prevail for the future.
