Abstract

This article analyzes the variables that facilitate or hinder the consolidation of regional integration processes in Latin America, particularly the Pacific Alliance. It argues that the existence of a social base is fundamental for the stability and viability of this integration process. It comparatively studies the central elements (economic liberalization, democratic consolidation and affinity with the United States) of the Pacific Alliance and Alba, and develops a statistical model to test if this elements determine the knowledge and evaluation of the Alliance. It finds that there are two fundamental challenges in the consolidation of its social bases: a limited knowledge and a neutral evaluation of it.
