Abstract

The Pacific Alliance is seen as one of the most successful regional grouping. Despite counting with a few years of existence, the positive data of the economies of the Alliance’s members (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru) make it a pole of attraction for other countries. A proof of its success is that the Alliance has 42 observer countries. In the case of Spain, being the first country to become an observer, there are several reasons of this intense rapprochement. Among them, the following must be considered: the pragmatic nature of the Alliance and its emphasis on the competitive economy, in line with what the government of Spain’s People’s Party, promoting trade, investments and the role of business; the approach towards orthodox measures by some Latin-America governments, in contrast with the options offered by left-wing governments or organizations such as Alba; a window of opportunity in the face of the different European crisis; the possible triangulation from the Pacific Alliance to Asian countries.
