Abstract

Of the 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, a large number were brought to that country by their parents or relatives when they were still children; that is, the decision to migrate was not made by them. These immigrant children, like any other American, attended school, built social networks, and were educated in that country; they are young people identical to any American, except for the possession of “papers”. Since 2001, civil society organizations, U.S. senators and representatives have proposed to the U.S. Congress some mechanism for the regularization of these young people; The term dreamer is derived from the acronym in English of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM Act) initiative, presented in 2006 and not yet approved.
