With this issue of the Revista Mexicana de Política Exterior, we wish to contribute to the reflection on the challenges currently facing the European integration process and, as a whole, the construction of a new Europe. It is also intended to highlight the importance that this process has for Mexico, as well as the challenges and opportunities that it means for our country. The Mexican strategy of diversifying international relations has a very valuable option on the European continent. Of course, this option goes beyond the diversification of international trade, and includes items as important as international cooperation in technical, scientific, political, multilateral, and integration matters, among others. The negotiations for an Agreement on Economic Cooperation and Political Coordination, which will most probably begin in 1996, invite us to keep in mind the moment the EU is going through, the past experiences in its relationship with Mexico and, above all, the potentialities that have not yet been been explored.
