State Recognition Today
Main Article Content
Abstract
The question of recognition, not so much of the existence of new States, has at least two facets: self-determination and the right of the recognizing State to grant a patent so that the recognized State can be considered a subject of international law. This facet has had strong political connotations and has been used as a pressure weapon to obtain concessions or maintain a certain status quo. In this essay a few observations are made on the question of the recognition of States and its validity as a political weapon in the current international context of extreme mobility and volatility at the end of the century.
